Dinner Discussion

Write here. Write now.

The next chapter of your writing journey starts here. Write that story you’ve had inside you for ages. Pick up that project you set aside, or take the one you’ve been working on to the next stage.

Join us for a week of writing master classes in an inspirational setting and make your writing what you want it to be. Learn, craft, write. Create and find your voice. This retreat is an intensive creative experience for those who want to learn more about writing and how to improve on their work. Beginners and experienced writers are welcome.

The workshop is led by long time development editor and multi-published author Victoria Villasenor, and multi-published author and photographer, Nicci Robinson. Together, they’ll deliver a two-hour workshop each morning dedicated to a different element of craft, as well as immediate feedback on quick-writing sessions designed to get your creativity flowing. We’ll start out by looking at writing on a broad scale and by the end of the week, we’ll be discussing the next steps to take toward publishing.

Throughout the week there’s one-to-one coaching and support available, so you have the time to ask questions and get the kind of personal feedback you need to move your writing forward.

Let’s Wander

And there are a number of great outings planned too! A stroll ending in dinner at the harbour, and a light evening meal at the local taverna are great ways to indulge in the local culture. Last year we even spent an afternoon writing down by the water.

If your partner wants to come but isn’t a writer, they’re welcome to join you for a nominal supplement. There’s plenty for them to do—shopping and tavernas or pubs in the local towns, the beach isn’t far away, hiking in the beautiful Andalusian mountains, or a visit to the local castle. Or they can just relax and unwind with a good book! (Maybe even yours!)

Writers sharing a room with other writers will pay a discounted price—so bring a fellow scribe!

Optional good stuff:

If you’re interested in photography, Nicci would be happy to provide tutorials during the week. Just get in touch for details.

Get inspired. Get writing.

Weather:

The weather in Spain is changeable in May, but still sunny and lovely, with an average of 24C/75F. Not too hot, and we often spend the afternoons writing beside the pool or outside our rooms. T-shirts during the day, and maybe a sweatshirt in the evening. It’s a perfect way to shake off winter.

The Writing Retreat Locations:

Week 1:

This stunning private luxury villa is in the lovely town of Benalmádena, which is only thirty minutes from Malaga airport. It’s also just a ten minute walk to the beach and a quick drive to the beautiful marina. The rooms are all allocated their own bathrooms, and there are lots of comfortable areas to write, both inside and out! Relax by the private pool, make yourself a meal to eat outside with everyone else in the well-equipped kitchen, and generally just relax and let the quiet surround you. Plenty of English is spoken in the town, so no need to worry if you don’t know Spanish! The villa is typically Spanish, and we’ve limited the number of participants to keep the intimate nature of the retreat while still allowing for plenty of room to concentrate on your words. We provide breakfast and lunch each day, and you’re free to make dinner in the communal kitchen. We’ll be making trips to Malaga as well as to the beach town of Torre del Mar, where there are some fantastic places to eat.

Week 2:

The village of Comares is located in the hills above Malaga, about thirty minutes from the coast. The setting that overlooks the hills is beautiful, quiet, and gives you exactly the right atmosphere to dig into your words. While it’s not far away from the coast by car, it’s not really a walkable area, and if you want to leave the villa during the week to wander (aside from when we head out to dinner or to wander as a group), then we’d suggest you get a car. Each of the rooms has its own dedicated bathroom, and the nearby village is quintessential Spanish. The villa grounds are spacious and the communal area is a great place to hang out in the evenings beneath the beautiful starlit sky. Testimonials:

“I attended Victoria’s writing workshop after my first novel was published. I was more than halfway into my second novel, but was struggling with structure. After the workshop I completely reworked the manuscript based on what I’d learned. The novel, The Time Before Now, ended up being one of The Lesbian Reviews top 10 books of 2016. Victoria’s seminar helped me gain a sharper understanding of the infrastructure required for crafting a strong story. I highly recommend it.” – Missouri Vaun

Loved my feedback session! I’m always wanting feedback, good or bad, as I feel it the most helpful part of a course. Victoria and Nicci are a well of information.  ~Morven

Vic and Nic’s teaching approach suits the way I learn. Non-threatening, sensitive to individuals within the group and professional. Would recommend and repeat this and similar courses. ~Wendy

The #1 thing was the quality of the teaching. The teaching was extremely skilful. ~Jan

Their teaching approach was very warm and open. I always felt comfortable sharing ideas and reading work, which isn’t always the case in a writing group. The course felt flexible, so that if another topic arises, more time can be spent on it. Would definitely recommend the course and would love to continue to learn more from Victoria and Nicci. The course has been a great help. ~Natalie
