Inspiration outside the vacuum by Iona Kane

May is possibly my favourite month of the year, but I’m wishing it away looking forward to the Queer the Shelves LGBT+ book fest in Nottingham at the end of the month. I can’t wait for a chance to meet other queer authors and the amazing people who read our books.

I started writing my first novel before the panny d hit, but it was finished and published during ‘covid times’. I managed to squeeze in writing retreats between lockdowns, where I got to meet some wonderful WLW authors, but there were no events to go to and meet the wider sapphic reading and writing community. This weekend I went to my first in-person event, and it was fantastic to meet people in real life.

We all got through the last couple of years with Zoom and Teams and watching events on YouTube, and some of that has created new connections we may never have imagined. I consider myself very lucky to be part of an inclusive community that shares knowledge and experience so freely.

But at the end of the day, you can’t beat a face to face conversation with a real human being. And in every interaction there’s inspiration. I can’t write in a vacuum, I need people to feed my imagination. Whether it’s a snippet of detail overheard in a nearby conversation, or the ten minute chat with a larger-than-life Aussie on the train to Crawley whose life story is literally a WLW romance waiting to be written. Even their names were perfect. (I’ll still change them!)

So if Nottingham is within travelling distance for you, come along and be a part of this fabulous event for the LGBT+ reading and writing community. And if we’re chatting and I start making notes, don’t worry, I’m just adding teabags to my shopping list.

Iona Kane will be at the Queer the Shelves LGBTQ Book Festival in Nottingham. Come along!
